Cabinet Overhaul – How to Refresh Your Cabinets Without Replacing Them Completely

Posted on 03/06/202403/06/2024 by admin

Cabinets take on a lot of abuse: being opened and closed numerous times, slammed against the wall or the floor, and a lifetime of exposure to sunlight. That’s why it’s important to keep up with regular cabinet maintenance to keep them looking their best and functioning as well as possible. If you’ve been thinking about a cabinet renovation in Tampa, it’s best to consult with a professional before taking on the project yourself. Cabinet repair specialists will be able to work faster and more efficiently than the average homeowner, and will ensure that your project is done correctly.

There are several ways to refresh your cabinetry without replacing them completely. Whether you opt for cabinet refacing or just a refinishing, these options can give your room a fresh new look that’s affordable and convenient.

The kitchen cabinet renovation process starts by removing all the existing cabinet doors and drawer headers. The cabinet boxes are then prepped and primed to be covered with veneers. After the veneers are applied, crown moldings are added to the tops of wall cabinets and smaller trim pieces are used to finish the bottom edges. Then, the doors and drawer headers are replaced along with new knobs, pulls and hinges. The resulting kitchen is as good as new and typically takes half the time to complete as a replacement cabinet remodel.

A refinishing is another option that’s popular for those who want to upgrade their kitchen or bathroom without going through the hassle and expense of an entire renovation. The cabinets will be sanded down and stained or painted to match the rest of the room, and the hardware can be updated as well. A refinishing can be more economical than a full refacing because the existing cabinet boxes and layout remain intact.

One of our clients wanted to change her entire kitchen layout, and she chose to combine upper cabinets with lower ones and add a broom closet next to the refrigerator. This involved removing the top drawers of two of her cabinets to make way for deeper pot drawers, adding an upper shelf above the stove, and moving the oven’s location to a more accessible position. It was a big project, but it turned out beautifully.

A cabinet replacement can be costlier than a refacing or refurbishing, but it’s a great option when you’re changing the overall layout of your cabinets or when the existing box structure isn’t damaged and only requires a facelift. A replacement can also be a better choice when you’re ready to replace old appliances or when you’re upgrading your countertops as well.
